Abstract
The Great War impressed upon André Maginot the necessity of defending the French frontier. He worked tirelessly to secure the funding that would build the line of fortifications that stretched along the Franco-German border. Although France fell in 1940 to the German blitzkrieg, Maginot, like the fortifications he gave his name to, deserves a fairer appraisal.
