Abstract

An entry in the Society’s Journal Book for 8 December 1670 reads ‘Monsieur Monceaux a French Gentleman and a great Traveller, son to Mons r . Monceaux Councellor to the most Christian King, and great Audiancier of France, was proposed Candidat to this Society. ’On the 15th, it has ‘Mons r . Andreas Monceaux, son to the great Audiencer of France, elected.’ No proposer, seconder or any other details are given and, apart from one letter and some incidental remarks in Oldenburg’s correspondence, nothing further seems to have been recorded of him in the English literature. However, the French archives show that amongst his contemporaries he was well known for his travels in the Middle East.
