Abstract

The union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is described as “green islands in marigold sun” on which horizons are fixed. It is also called “KALAPANI” or the land of dark water because of the inhuman and degrading treatment of deported convicts and prisoners by the British government. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have a single active volcano at the Barren Island. The islands are covered with dense forest and are rich in various types of flora and fauna. The main rock systems of the islands consist of sedimentary rocks, made up of sandstone and conglomerates. The soils in the islands are mainly of alluvial type in valleys and hard clay type in hills. In this chapter, different types of rocks and properties of soils present in this union territory are presented. The chapter also includes specific information about geomaterials, natural hazards and case studies.
