And so the Journey Begins: An Embodied Approach to Children’s Translocal Materialities

Abstract

The focus of the chapter is on the body, on sensory experiences and on emotions, in as much as they form constitutive parts of family life. The authors analyse in detail children’s embodied experiences and attitudes towards several aspects of travel: the different localities, their materialities and the people connected with these localities. The analysis is based on material collected among Estonian and Latvian families living translocal lives. In trying to understand everyday translocality for children, Bankovska and Siim explore how it is experienced by, inscribed on, and related to children’s bodies. With this work, the authors contribute to the conceptualisation of translocality as a corporeal experience and to discussions on the challenges researchers meet when trying to investigate hard-to-verbalise sensory information, experiences and memories.
