Abstract
This volume offers an introduction to the scholarly literature (mainly but not exclusively from the 20th century) on the 13th century guide for anchoresses, Ancrene Wisse, and the related Middle English devotional prose works unsually grouped together as the 'Katherine Group' and the 'Wooing Group'. Its extended General Introduction surveys the history of scholarship on the Ancrene Wisse Group, and the methodological problems involved in its research. A separate section lists and discusses the manuscripts of the works of the Group, with references for further reading. There is a chronologically-arranged General Bibliography with full annotations, an Index of Scholars and Critics, and a general subject-index.
