Abstract

At my age—87—I can still remember the period of 1912–1920, when the Bureau of Entomology, USDA, had me stationed in South Carolina for cotton pest research. I had occasion yearly to run up to Washington for short stays. I was able at times to attend local meetings of the Entomological Society of Washington, and had the pleasure of mingling with its members. Among them were: Drs. Howard, Marlatt, Hunter, Chittenden, Quaintance, Banks, Townsend, Felt, Schwarz, VanDine, Bishopp, Doane and others. The meetings were held in a modest building on Pennsylvania Avenue. The Deutscher Verein also held their meetings there. E. A. Schwarz, a German member of the Washington Society, usually attended the meetings and usually arranged to have a keg of beer for those who liked it.
