This text has been completely revised and expanded. It includes an updated account of controversies over first settlement, and new material on the eastern Plains farmers, the rock paintings of the Pecos areas and the archaeology of the Northwest Plateau. Canadian cultures and archaelogical sites receive additional attention, and current theoretical issues are debated, guiding the reader through a rapidly changing field.
