Abstract

The New Clarendon Bible series is designed to be read alongside the Bible and includes commentary on the text. It replaces the Clarendon Bible series, taking account of recent research but keeping old-fashioned format. There are four volumes: G. W. Anderson, The History and Religion of Israel, history and religion treated together throughout; E. W. Heaton, The Hebrew Kingdoms; P. R. Ackroyd, Israel under Babylon and Persia; and D. S. Russell, The Jews from Alexander to Herod, which deals first with history, then with religious ideas and institutions. H. Swanston, The Kings and the Covenant and N. Kotker, The Holy Land in the Time of Jesus are both suitable for 9-13 years. The series by A. Parrot, Studies in Biblical Archaeology is still useful, though out of print. A useful general atlas for schools is the Oxford Bible Atlas, ed. H. G. May and others, which has clear maps, an historical outline of the Biblical period and photographs.
