Abstract
ABSTRACT Background and Aim: This study was carried out to investigate the course and distribution of the portal vein that mainly drained the gastrointestinal tract. Anatomical studies on the venous drainage of the gastrointestinal tract of the rabbit were necessary to know the pattern of its blood supply to gain information in benefit of experimental surgery, pharmacology and toxicology which can be applied to domestic animals and human, also helped in the field of veterinary comparative anatomy. Material and Methods: The present work was carried out on six adult, apparently healthy rabbits of both sexes. The animals were slaughtered, cannulated and flushed with warm normal saline (0.9%). Then animals were injected with blue gum milk latex, the specimens were subjected to fine dissection. Results: The main tributaries of the portal vein were; the gastroduodenal, Splenic, left gastric, caudal pancreaticoduodenal and cranial pancreaticoduodenal vien. Conclusion: This results show a variation between rabbits and other mammals, which helped in the field of comparative anatomy.
