Abstract

One hundred and twenty-five mandibles were studied and the following findings were observed: 1. 1. A high incidence of lingual mandibular bone depressions which were poorly defined on radiography. 2. 2. In the majority of cases the location of the mental foramen was beneath the second premolar, and 22·5 per cent of the mental foramina were located distal to the second premolar. In addition, variations in the number of mental foramina was found. 3. 3. Six cases of lingual fenestrations of lower wisdom teeth were found. 4. 4. Retromolar foramina were found in 21 instances. 5. 5. Thirty-one condyles were found to have defects and in the majority of cases these defects could not be observed on x-rays, especially when the defects were small and situated in the centre of the condyle.
