Abstract

Angklung Gubrag is one of the ancient musical instruments originated from Cipining Village, Bogor Regency. Instead of using Gigantochloa atroviolacea, community of Cipining contends that Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea much better used as angklung’s raw material. This study aimed to compare the characteristic of anatomy and sound intensity between Gigantochloa atroviolacea and Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea that used as Angklung Gubrag sound tube. The study conducted from June to October 2016. Sound intensity of bamboo was calculated using sound level meter. The anatomies of bamboo culm were compared using hand sections and maceration technique.. Anatomical slides and maceration sample of bamboo observed under a microscope in Bio Imaging Laboratory Department of Biology. The results showed that Angklung Gubrag Gigantochloa atroviolacea has lower sound intensity than Angklung Gubrag Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea. Vessel types that made up the sound tube from Gigantochloa atroviolacea and Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea dominated by type III. Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea has highest density of vascular bundles, while Gigantochloa atroviolacea have wider area of vascular bundles and sclerenchym bundles. Fiber cells of Gigantochloa atroviolacea are longer than Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea. Reasons for choosing Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea as a raw material for Angklung Gubrag due to its high sound intensity, affected by high density of vascular bundles from the species.
