Abstract

Surgical treatment of chronic mid-substance Achilles tendon ruptures are challenging, as considerable defects in the tendon are rarely amenable to end-to-end repair. Various procedures have been described to bridge the gap between the proximal and the distal tendon ends. In this article, we describe our experience in reconstruction of chronic Achilles tendon ruptures using V-Y lengthening and turndown procedures in combination with a plantaris tendon transfer. These techniques represent attractive alternative procedures to non-anatomic reconstructions for chronic Achilles tendon ruptures using the flexor hallucis longus or peroneus brevis tendons.
