Abstract

Success with the portacaval shunt has led to the interest of the surgeon in the anatomy of the portal venous system. This has been further stimulated by the more recent advances in portal angiography and by the introduction of newer techniques for the construction of portasystemic shunts. Vascular anatomy is presented as it relates to the modern concepts in pathophysiology and therapy of portal hypertension.
