Abstract

The design of the secondary-cooling system of a continuous slab caster in the electric steelmaking shop at Ural Steel is analyzed. Defects in the slabs are studied and the effect of secondary cooling on the surface defects and macrostructure of the slabs is determined. Thermal calculations are performed of the slab crystallization process, and it is found that the existing design of the secondary-cooling system makes it impossible to use the caster to cast high-strength tube steels or ship plate. Technical recommendations are made for modernizing the system.
