Abstract
Retirement benefits represent a tremendous but obscured component of corporations’ finances. The current accounting rules have smoothing mechanisms that do not make any sense, resulting in significant off-balance-sheet items, and that allow companies to report net pension assets even when they are underfunded. Accounting reform is needed to better reflect the real impact of retirement liabilities on corporations’ cash flows and to prod corporations and investors to address the economic reality created by retirement liabilities.
