Promoting the concept and principles of sustainable development at the micro level requires that industrial companies understand and improve approaches to managing corporate sustainability. Currently, economics does not provide a universal definition of what corporate sustainability is. With regard to the mining sector, corporate sustainability issues reflecting the viability, value, and sustainable development potential of companies have not yet been studied extensively. The article discusses the conceptual foundations of corporate sustainability; the characteristics and a classification of approaches to defining corporate sustainability; and the relationship between corporate sustainability, sustainable development at the micro level, and circular economy. By analyzing the example of Russia, the influence of the mining industry on the environmental, economic, and social development of both a country with a resource-based economy and individual mining regions is shown from the viewpoint of sustainability. The distinguishing features of mining companies, which include natural capital and mineral assets, are studied in the context of promoting corporate sustainability. It is proven that the effective corporate management of ESG factors results in environmental and social influence that goes in line with sustainable development requirements and serves as a foundation for corporate sustainability. A refined definition of corporate sustainability has been formulated, the specific features of corporate sustainability management in mining companies have been determined, and the specific features of corporate social responsibility have been studied. The issue of integrating circular economy elements into the corporate sustainability concept is discussed, and it is claimed that the inclusion of circular business models in the corporate strategies of mining companies will contribute to their corporate sustainable development and boost their contribution to the achievement of sustainable development goals.

Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development
  • Dec 19, 2016
  • Risa Bhinekawati

Many different companies can significantly contribute to the integrated goals and targets of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals, such as poverty reduction by 2030. Poverty is not only about people living on less than $1.25 per day, but more fundamentally, it is their lack of capabilities and access to participate in productive economic activities. If companies can contribute in order to provide access and the necessary skills, then individuals will have the capabilities to achieve their aspirations, including earning a higher income. Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development supports Sen’s assertions that poverty can be alleviated if the capability of individuals is improved. Beyond that, this book shows that sustainable development goals can be achieved when the company’s CSR programs and social capital development in improving people’s capabilities are combined with necessary finance access and market access for the poor. The theoretical model developed from the journey of Astra International, one of the largest public-listed companies in Indonesia, is replicable for other companies aspiring to be sustainable in developing countries. The model shows a virtuous cycle between the corporate aim, CSR programs, social capital and corporate sustainability. This volume is of great value to academics, practitioners and policy makers interested in the themes of CSR, social capital and sustainable development of developing countries. It also appeals to professionals in industry associations, development agencies and international organizations, as well as NGOs that are concerned with the achievement of sustainable development goals by 2030.

  • Hussam Al Halbusi + 2 more

Purpose This study investigates the role of knowledge management and absorptive capacity in promoting sustainable corporate development, examining the moderating effect of information technology (IT) within major organizations in Qatar. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative research design was employed, collecting data from 218 respondents from major organizations in Qatar. The analysis focused on validating the relationships among knowledge management, absorptive capacity and sustainable corporate development, with IT as a boundary condition. Findings The findings indicate that knowledge management significantly contributes to sustainable corporate development, mediated by absorptive capacity. IT enhances these relationships, showing that higher IT levels strengthen the positive effects of knowledge management and absorptive capacity on sustainable corporate development. Research limitations/implications The study’s focus on major organizations in Qatar may limit the generalizability of the results. Future research could extend the scope to a more diverse range of organizations and regions. Practical implications Organizations can improve sustainable development practices by investing in knowledge management and enhancing absorptive capacity. Leveraging IT further strengthens these efforts, leading to more effective and sustainable corporate outcomes. Social implications Promoting knowledge management and IT utilization helps organizations contribute to broader sustainable development goals, fostering more responsible and sustainable business practices that benefit society. Originality/value This study uniquely integrates knowledge management, absorptive capacity and IT to explore their combined impact on sustainable corporate development. It is one of the first empirical studies providing novel insights into the drivers of sustainable business practices in the context of major organizations in Qatar.

  • George Lăzăroiu + 3 more

In this article, we cumulate previous research findings indicating that organizations advance to superior phases of environmental management development in order to attain corporate sustainability by the use of participative decision-making. We contribute to the literature on corporate sustainability management and performance by showing that the correlation between sustainable development governance, organizational knowledge, sustainable organizational development, and corporate sustainability, which shapes corporate environmental and sustainability management. Throughout June 2020, we conducted a quantitative literature review of ProQuest, Scopus, and the Web of Science databases, with search terms including “corporate sustainability”, “corporate sustainability management”, “corporate sustainability performance”, “sustainability reporting”, “sustainable supply chain management”, “sustainable corporate development”, and “environmental management systems”. As we inspected research published exclusively in the past two years, only 338 articles met the eligibility criteria. By eliminating the findings that were questionable, unsubstantiated by replication, or too general, and due to space limitations, we selected 93, mainly empirical, sources. Future research should investigate whether corporate governance systems, through organizational sustainability practices and performance reporting, can shape operational environmental sustainability and sustainable organizational culture.

Corporate Social Responsibility, Sustainability, Sustainable Development and Corporate Sustainability: What Is the Difference, and Does It Matter?
  • May 25, 2021
  • Sustainability
  • Benedict Sheehy + 1 more

The terms “corporate social responsibility” (CSR), “sustainability”, “sustainable development” and “corporate sustainability” (CS) are critical terms for developing, analysing and evaluating public and private policy goals. These terms are used to make decisions about investment, policy development, and strategy creation. The terms emerged in different fields of endeavour at different points in time. Accordingly, they have different meanings; however, over time they have come to be used interchangeably mixing up policy agendas, confusing managers, regulators, activists and the public at large. We demonstrate that CSR is the best term for focusing on individual business organisations, “corporate sustainability” is an organisation level environmental policy, “sustainable development” is a public policy, and “sustainability” is the broadest term encompassing global local and organisational levels.

Corporate Social Responsibility, Sustainability, Sustainable Development and Corporate Sustainability: What Is the Difference and Does It Matter?

  • Benedict Sheehy + 1 more

The terms corporate social responsibility, ‘sustainability’, ‘sustainable development’ and ‘corporate sustainability’ are critical terms for developing, analysing and evaluating public and private policy goals. The terms are used in decision-making concerning investments in many types of activities including policy development, strategy creation and implementation via resource allocation. These terms emerged in different fields of endeavour at different points in time. Accordingly, it is only to be expected that they do not coalesce in terms of meaning; however, in the intervening years, they have come to be used interchangeably mixing up policy agendas, confusing managers, regulators and activists and the public at large. We argue that CSR is the only business focused term that includes at a fundamental law social and ethical dimensions. The other terms are important, but should be distinguished and used carefully to help parties achieve their goals. These distinctions, which refer to roots of our scholarly endeavours, will help organisations to face and consider society’s most pressing problems as well as call for future research to develop areas of research unique to these fields of study (Bansal and Song, 2017).

Urbanization and Land Use Planning for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): A Case Study of Greece
  • Apr 24, 2023
  • Urban Science
  • Dimitrios Kalfas + 3 more

Sustainable development has attracted the attention of social-economic, spatial well-being, and cultural continuity advocates across the world. However, the processes involved in land use as well as urban development have continued to affect the attainment of sustainable development. This study assessed the effects of urbanization and land use planning on achieving sustainable development goals. The data were collected using a survey questionnaire from 384 different government leaders in Greece. The study showed that the indicators of urbanization quality have a positive effect on sustainable development goals. It was revealed that there is a significant relationship between integrated land use strategies and sustainable development goals. The study showed that indicators of urbanization quality are very key to achieving different SDGs. This indicates that sustainable urbanization entails more than just converting agricultural land and forests without making any changes to them into cities, and it is equally one of the answers to the problem of the world’s population growth if it is done with vision and dedication. The study clearly shows that integrated land use strategies are important in achieving the SDGs. In this case, land use planning is mostly a local effort, though some nations employ guiding land use plans created at the regional or inter-municipal level. Furthermore, urbanization opportunities and land-use plans have a great influence on the achievement of sustainable development goals. Notably, the goal of sustainable urban development is to make urban areas “sustainable” as well as to build or reinforce the city’s sustainability-related economic, social, cultural, and environmental aspects. It then goes on to discover how to spread that idea and why it is important to be focused, using various definitions. The fundamental idea of sustainable urban development is then realized by reviewing the ideas and principles of sustainable development. Finally, some general recommendations are made regarding urban planning, sustainable urban development, and the significance of establishing the necessary conditions for its realization. Urban sustainability and proper use of land require structural changes as well as significant, fundamental shifts at all societal levels.

This article reviews existing research on sustainability and sustainable development around the world. At the same time, the paper highlights the dimensions of sustainable development based on relevant literature and sources. The presented study uses a literature and source review methodology. We would also like to note that each region of the global world has made some progress towards achieving high levels of sustainable development. However, each region also faces unique challenges that impact the achievement of sustainable development goals in the region. These challenges have social, political, structural, institutional, and economic dimensions. Although sustainable development is a widely accepted concept in academic circles, its practicality is controversial in the political community. This paper examines existing barriers, analyzes economic, environmental, social and political challenges that hinder the full realization of the Sustainable Development Goals, and presents potential solutions to overcome these problems. The aim of the study is to find a new way to answer the question of why the principles of sustainable development are being implemented in practice at such a slow pace. The research conducted confirmed that if sustainable development is to be the most important issue for current and future development, it must be structured around the basic requirements raised by science. Finally, relevant empirical studies show that integrating sustainability or sustainable development issues into business or environmental management provides certain positive benefits.

How Does Digital Transformation Increase Corporate Sustainability? The Moderating Role of Top Management Teams
  • Jul 11, 2023
  • Systems
  • Yaxin Zhang + 1 more

Digitization is a megatrend that shapes the economy and society, driving major transformations. Enterprises, as the most important microeconomic entities, are critical carriers for society in conducting digital transformation and practicing sustainable development to achieve socioeconomic and environmental sustainability. Exploring the relationship and mechanisms between digital transformation and sustainable corporate development is crucial. This study investigates the influence of digital transformation on sustainable corporate development as well as its moderating mechanisms. A two-way fixed effects model is used on a research sample of Chinese A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2010 to 2020. Three methods are used for robustness testing to alleviate endogeneity issues. The empirical results show that digital transformation can significantly enhance sustainable corporate development, whereas empowered management and highly educated employees are essential complementary human resources that effectively strengthen the contribution of digitalization to sustainability. Additionally, internal controls are internal drivers that have a positive moderating effect on the digital transformation to improve corporate sustainability. This study reveals that digital transformation is an important tool for promoting corporate sustainability, broadening the literature in related fields, and providing insights for corporate management and government policymakers to advance corporate sustainability.

Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability: From a Corporate Governance Perspective
  • Nov 21, 2022
  • Sustainability
  • Lijuan Wu + 1 more

Sustainable corporate development has become essential for many enterprises in the context of economic globalization and fierce technological competition. In fact, it is being tackled at a strategic level by most companies. The fulfillment of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is significant in building a corporate image, improving brand competitiveness, and promoting sustainable corporate development. Simultaneously, the level of corporate governance is a crucial factor in an enterprise’s long-term development. Therefore, this study clarifies whether CSR has a positive impact on the sustainable development of enterprises through empirical analysis; it also analyzes the effects of internal governance factors on the relationship between the two, from the perspective of corporate governance. A fixed-effects regression analysis was conducted on a sample of Chinese A-share listed companies from 2015 to 2019. According to the results, active CSR can promote sustainable development. Furthermore, corporate governance factors such as internal control, management capabilities, and accounting information quality have a moderating role in the CSR process on sustainable corporate development. This study provides a theoretical basis for future research on CSR and sustainable development, and its findings can inspire governments and enterprises from the perspective of corporate governance.

At the current development stage of the Russian economy, a global trend towards sustainable development and focusing on solving the environmental issues extensively transforms the current economic linear model. The UN proposes sustainable development as a new future paradigm which determines the solutions for biosphere preservation, less degradation of the natural environment and better social sphere. Circular economy is aimed at introducing sound, environmentally friendly technologies in industry to reduce the consumption of natural resources. The purpose of this article is to determine the links between methodological approaches designed to assess sustainable development and circular economy. The hypothesis of the research is that the implementation of circular economy principles contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals. The relevancy of these study tasks is conditioned by the need to develop a unified conceptual methodological framework for the theoretical substantiation of the material under study. At the first stage of the research, bibliometric analysis sampled 679 publications from the Scientific Electronic Library eLibrary. At the second stage, the articles which describe methodological approaches to the assessment of circular economy and sustainable development were identified. The indicators used in these methodological approaches are grouped into economic, environmental, and social categories. This helped reveal the link between them by their attribution to the assessment of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and circular economy principles. The study shows that the set of indicators for circular economy and sustainable development are mostly consistent with each other, which may confirm the hypothesis of the study. At the same time, the study reveals some principles of circular economy which lack any assessment criteria in the analyzed methodological approaches. The levels of methodological approaches to circular economy were found. The author proposes some areas for improving indicators that can contribute to the implementation of circular economy principles for sustainable development in the economy of the Russian Federation.

  • Jonathan P Doh + 1 more

ABSTRACTIn this paper, we review efforts by business school academics to integrate corporate social responsibility, sustainability, and sustainable development in their teaching and coursework. We draw from recent research to describe the challenges and constraints to such integration, as well as the opportunities and potential of such efforts. We then report on the results of a survey of academics in business schools which underscore these challenges and constraints. We conclude with suggestions regarding how individual faculty members, business schools, and the broader field and its institutions can respond to the relative absence of these subjects and their integration in business school curricula. • Regina Veckalne + 1 more

In the past three decades, the concept of sustainable development became the focus of attention in practically all developed and developing countries. This concept aims to balance various economic, ecological, and social aspects that form the key pillars of sustainability. Notwithstanding the growing literature on sustainability, it is still unclear what components impact it. This paper summarizes and systematizes contemporary theoretical and methodological approaches to sustainable development and reviews urban sustainability factors mentioned in the literature to identify which ones are the most common and considered to be the most important. The authors analyzed the theoretical and practical foundations of the circular economy as a relatively new trend in sustainable urban development. Through the literature analysis, this paper concluded that the factors mentioned the most are related to the traditional three pillars of the sustainability model. Overall, 14 factors have been identified and packed into 4 groups: social factors, environmental factors, economic factors, and awareness factors. The research made it clear that the circular economy concept keeps evolving. It could be useful for achieving higher levels of urban sustainability through impact on some of the key urban sustainability factors. The achievement of sustainable development goals is reached within the general modernization processes observed in the economy and society. The technological and managerial innovations currently being implemented take into account the social, economic, and ecological needs of different subjects to the economy. This research paper is limited by its reliance on other scholars' self-reporting results of their studies. The results of this study could be used for further research in this field and perform as a foundation of achieving sustainable development on different levels of management through circular business models, recycled raw materials market, and management of circular production and consumption.

I review a degree of compliance of Russian companies to international and national standards, relevant to practices of leading companies, a degree of involvement of Russian companies in general sustainable development. Particular interest lays in the study of influence of social responsibility of business, socially responsible sustainable development on the company. This line of research is only beginning to emerge in Russia. Interpretation of corporate social responsibility role allows a different look at the phenomenon of social responsibility and its role in sustainable development. Russian companies quickly accepted the concept of sustainable development, as well as the corresponding terminology. It is important to trace now how basic ideas and principles of sustainable development are reflected in the company’s strategy and implemented in practice. By analyzing non-financial reporting I will introduce ways, tendencies and problems of corporate social responsibility implementation by Russian companies.
