Abstract

The modern business climate presents challenges with the evolution and convergence of networks, the use of third-party equipment, outsourcing and changes in customers' management of networks. While driving the same availability requirements, these modern challenges cause a need for designers to apply increased attention to a full network view of availability, including products manufactured by third-party suppliers. Traditional models of reliability are generally based on either a component or system view and provide a solid theoretical foundation for predicting system reliability. But modern business challenges tend to disrupt the application of traditional models. This paper analyzes the modern mobile data network of one service provider. It begins with requirements and expectations derived from Lucent Technologies' history and core competency. With those expectations, it then presents an analysis that was performed. It compares the modern data network topology to that of the traditional voice telecommunications network for reference to help maintain a solid reliability strategy. Finally, emphasizing the importance of a network-wide view of reliability helps maintain overall control of reliability.
