Abstract

The conventional 2D Smith chart has some limitations like, inability to represent impedances with negative resistance within a finite space for active circuits. However, a 3D Smith chart can be used instead of a 2D Smith chart to overcome these limitations, and hence it helps in expanding the field of microwave engineering applications. This paper analyses the 3D Smith chart in an illustrative manner. Different 2D plane views of the 3D Smith chart are provided to better understand the 3D Smith chart.
