Abstract

An analytical technique based on a mathematical 1-dimensional MEA model has been developed for characterization of efficiency losses and MEA design. In the model, an effect of coverage on active sites on ORR activity is considered as well as mass transfer resistances in an MEA. In order to remove a critical issue on a model-fitting analysis on an experimental polarization curve, arbitrariness in parameter determination, we devised a scheme of simultaneous fitting on curves obtained at various experimental conditions. Applying the technique, each contribution of each loss factor to a total efficiency loss is successfully extracted from the series of the experimental polarization curves, and bottlenecks of the cell performance is identified. In addition, it is demonstrated that performance simulation based on the model effectively support a design of an MEA with a target performance.
