Abstract

An analytical study has been herein presented to predict the stress distribution in thick-walled porous (permeable) cylinders subjected to internal and/or external pressures. The maximum induced stress in the tangential direction is derived with due consideration to pipes applications assuming either single or compound cylinders. Results have been displayed in the form of charts to assist in design procedures. Results confirmed that the induced stresses in porous pipes are greater than that developed in impermeable cylinders. Also, coating of porous cylinders with an impermeable coating or fitting a porous cylinder inside a solid one would cause higher stress values to develop in the porous matrix.
