Abstract

Background
A breast lump can be a symptom of a variety of mild to serious diseases, ranging from infections to benign to malignancies. Early presentation and prompt diagnosis is essential to relieve anxiety of non-neoplastic conditions, and in case of carcinoma, it can save the patient from metastases.
Methods
The materials for the present study was collected from patients admitted to the hospital, and from the biopsy specimens of these patients submitted to the Department of Pathology, Microsoft Excel 2010 was used for all the statistical analysis.
Results
A total of 976 cases were included in the study. The most common type of benign breast tumor was fibroadenoma followed by fibrocystic disease. For the malignant cases, infiltrating breast carcinoma (NOS) SBR GRADE-II was the most common lesion and was common in the fifth decade of life. Common tumor size was in the range of 2–5cm. All the cases of lobular mucinous and invasive cribriform carcinoma were associated with lymph node metastasis.
Conclusion
Hence breast lumps occurring in older patients should be carefully evaluated before definitive surgical procedures are employed.
