Abstract

This paper investigates the propagation of acceleration waves on a nonlinear, externally damped string. Using the singular perturbation method, the hyperbolic system of quasilinear partial differential equations of a string is analyzed. Employing this method provides an opportunity to acquire further physical insights into acceleration wave propagation by extracting the interactions between damping and nonlinearity and their effects on the system behavior as the wave propagates along the string. Considerable agreement is observed between the analytical model of this paper and numerical simulations.
