Abstract

It is demonstrated that for experiments in a 100 T field the most suitable wave form is a half-sine wave, and that monolithic 100 T coils with optimized current distribution or internal reinforcement require a pulse generator with very high power and high voltage. This can be circumvented by using a system of two concentric coils, consisting of a small high strength coil (Coilin) inside a large conventional coil (Coilex). A set of analytical formulae is developed which gives a comprehensive view on the characteristics of Coilins immersed in a Coilex field B 0 •. The optimal shape of Coilex is determined as well.
