Abstract

The properties of fluorescence (quantum yield, sensitivity, band-width) and of chemiluminescence for the peroxyoxalate excitation reaction (excitation and chemiluminescence quantum yield, maximal intensity, half-life of emission) of several aminocoumarins are determined. The influence of environmental conditions (pH, solvents) and of the fluorophore concentration on the chemiluminescence quantum yield are also investigated. The correlation between the excitation yield and two easily measurable properties of the molecule (the half-wave oxidation potential and the singlet excitation energy) is demonstrated. The relevance of each parameter on the signal obtained in liquid chromatography is discussed, and guidelines for a proper choice of a fluorophore are given.
