Abstract

Description is given of an analytical variational method for determination of the stress intensity factors in anisotropic plates with unsymmetric double edge cracks. The analysis is based upon the use of the two-dimensional theory of anisotropic elasticity to establish stress and displacement series which satisfy all basic equations, the condition of given resultant forces and the single valued condition around the pin holes. A generalized variational principle for multi-regions is applied to satisfy the boundary conditions and interface conditions between subregions. The coefficients in the above series and the stress intensity factors can then be solved. Numerical studies reveal that convergent results are obtained by a quite simple program which reduces data manipulation and computer time. A very satisfactory degree of accuracy is obtained from the results when compared with the findings of earlier studies.
