Abstract

In this paper, the performance of automatic retransmission request (ARQ) schemes at the forward link of a wireless system with long round trip delay, e.g., a land mobile satellite (LMS) system, is investigated. Two typical methods, namely conventional and chase combining ARQ schemes, are studied. By modeling the land mobile satellite channel as a hybrid Markov process, we propose an analytical model to evaluate the packet loss rate and transmission efficiency. Simulation is employed to facilitate the use of the model when channel dynamics is taken into account. The proposed analytical approach is intended to provide a platform for the system design and analysis involving ARQ schemes in the LMS system.
