Abstract

Describes the work of the National Fish and Wildlife Forensics Laboratory, located at Southern Oregon State College, the first laboratory in the world dedicated to wildlife crime. The differentiation between modern elephant ivory and ancient ivory from mastodon and mammoth sources is based on the characterization of Schreger lines by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy can be used to detect dentin, which, if present, can be analyzed to differentiate between other sources such as walrus or hippopotamus. There is also a discussion of the use of DNA PCR techniques to identify the origins of bear gall bladders.
