Abstract

This article intends to study the performance of sandwich panels consisting of four isotropic flat plates and three trapezoidal or sinusoidal cores. The sandwich panels, subjected to the uniform loading resting on simply supported edges, are analyzed by an analytical method based on the classical plate theory and commercially available software. The homogenization method is used for the analytical method to replace the core by a flat plate with an equivalent stiffness. Results show that the deflected shape of the equivalent sandwich plate with the flat core is similar to that of the original corrugated plate measured by using shell elements in ABAQUS. The effects of geometric characteristics on the deflection and Von-Mises’s stress are also studied by the finite element method analysis. Results show that the trapezoidal-core panel has better performance as compared to the sinusoidal-core one. Moreover, results show that the corrugation thickness and amplitude have considerable effects on the performance of the panel. A wide validity range is also obtained for the thickness of the sinusoidal-core panel as compared to the trapezoidal-core panel.
