Abstract

The horizontal field and the spectral response function of a planar head with either constant or linear pole potential, derived by a 2-D Fourier analysis, are presented. Exact Fourier coefficients are provided for a range of head dimensions. Good approximations can be achieved by evaluating the field or the response using only a few terms of the series. Comparisons are made between planar heads and thin film heads and ring heads of corresponding dimensions. The horizontal field of a planar head has no undershoots nor does the spectral response function exhibit head bumps. Linearly grading the potential of a planar head effectively increases the gap length.
