Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study were to investigate the transmittances of ultraviolet light and visible light according to materials used for spectacle lenses. Methods : A total of 118 transparent spectacle lenses of 5 companies being used were applied. The period of use was divided into three groups : less than 1 year, 1 year or more but less than 2 years and more than 2 years. The refractive index was also divided into the Medium refractive index(1.55~1.56), the High refractive index(1.60) and the Ultra High refractive index(1.67~ 1.74). The transmittance of UV(200~380) and visible light(380~780nm) of the spectacle lens was measured using the Topcon TM-1. Results : The UV, UVA, UVB and visible light transmittance measurements were compared according to the materials for each period of use. There was no significant difference in the transmittance measurements according to the material of the spectacle lens with the use period of less than 1 year (p=0.189, p=0.197, p=0.081, and p=0.073). The UV, UVA, and visible light transmittance measurements showed statistically significant differences according to the material of the spectacle lens with the use period of 1 year or more and less than 2 years(p=0.001, p=0.001, and p=0.003). There was no significant difference in the transmittance measurements according to the material of the spectacle lens with the use period of more than 2 years (p=0.673, p=0.674, p=0.982, and p=0.138). Conclusion : As a result of this study, there was a difference in the transmittance of each material according to the use period of the spectacle lens. Therefore, it may be helpful to select material and the use period of eyeglass lens.
