Abstract

Objective To understand the status of AIDS stigma among HIV-infected patients in Kunming, and to analyze the causes and influencing factors of the stigma. Methods Systematic sampling method was used to collect samples from surviving HIV-infected patients in Kunming. The questionnaire included general demographic data, knowledge of AIDS and AIDS-related stigma. The AIDS stigma among HIV-infected patients was investigated by the Simplified AIDS Shame Scale (BHSS). Results A total of 962 HIV-infected patients, including 696 males and 266 females were investigated.The average score of the BHSS scale was (11.29±3.35). The average scores were higher among subjects with Han nationality, current addresses in cities and towns as well as no knowledge for AIDS prevention and control (P<0.05). The results of multiple linear analysis showed that the stigma was stronger among subjects with Han nationality, current addresses in cities and towns, recent confirmation of diagnosis and limited awareness of knowledge for AIDS prevention and control (P<0.05). Conclusions HIV-infected patients in our city had different degrees of AIDS stigma. The government and relevant professional institutions should take appropriate propaganda and intervention measures to reduce the internal stigma caused by external social discrimination.
