Abstract

An a.c./d.c. full-controlled converter with a few damaged power switches can still be operated with deteriorated output performance and may temporarily be used to supply part of the load. In this paper, the output characteristics of a partially damaged converter are investigated by employing the derived switching functions. These switching functions can easily be implemented to formulate the resultant output waveforms and calculate the effective output voltages for all possible fault cases. Based on these switching functions, the operating characteristics of the abnormal full-controlled converter can be calculated for the operations of both continuous and discontinuous load currents. Finally, experimental results obtained from a battery charging system are exhibited to validate the simulation results.
