Abstract

Objective To evaluate the clinical effect and feasibility of phacoemulsification technique for cataract with low corneal endothelial cell density. Methods A total of 22 patients(26 eyes) of cataract with low corneal endothelial cell counts(<1500/mm2)underwent phacoemulsification and intraocular lens(IOL)implantation. In which there were 8 cases(10 eyes)of glaucoma,5 cases(5 eyes)of anterior segment inflamation, and 4 cases(4 eyes) of post-vitrectomy.The visual acuity and the occurrences of corneal edema were observed after the surgery. Results The visual acuity after the operation was improved in all cases. The best corrected visual acuity was 0.1-0.3 in 8 eyes.higher than 0.3 in 18 eyes. The cornea edema was milder than stage Ⅰ in 11 eyes one day after operation.Corneal edema of stage Ⅱ occurred in 10 eyes, and stage Ⅲ in 5 eyes, but no case was suffered from corneal decompensation. Conclusion With advanced intraocular lens(IOL),rich experience and skillful surgery techniques, patients of cataract with low corneal endothelial cell counts may be treated with phacocmulsification and IOL implantation. Key words: phacoemulsification; corneal endothelial cell; corneal edema
