Analysis on corrosion-induced failure of shale gas gathering pipelines in the southern Sichuan Basin of China

Abstract

In the shale gas field in southern Sichuan Basin, the corrosion-induced failure has been observed. In this paper, first, the corrosion phenomenon was analyzed. Second, the causes of corrosion were analyzed thoroughly from the aspects of corrosive environment, materials, and corrosion products. Finally, the field water environment was simulated, and the result showed the following: SRB is one of the main causes of corrosion and perforation of shale gas pipelines, bacterial enrichment is the primary reason for local corrosion, and CO2 promotes the formation of bacterial film and accelerates corrosion.
