Abstract

In order to investigate compressibility effects on turbulence, direct numerical simulations (DNS) of a compressible and incompressible decaying homogeneous and isotropic turbulence are conducted. We pay special attention to tubular vortices as a typical and important structure in turbulence. Properties of tubular vortices in compressible and incompressible turbulence are compared. It is shown that there are distinct differences in vortex structures of compressible and incompressible turbulence. Spatial variations of the incompressible pressure fluctuations and the Laplacian of it show a tendency that swirling motions in compressible turbulence are weaker than those in incompressible turbulence.
