Abstract

Soil mechanics accommodates materials that nature has endowed with complex characteristics, variable in space and time, and whose measurement is difficult. Therefore, the mechanical parameters that must be introduced in the geotechnical calculations are often poorly known. This work proposes a computer program based on global optimization by genetic algorithm in order to analyze slope stability problems that determines the failure surface, which corresponds to a minimum reliability index. A simple example of homogeneous slope is used to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed approach. The change of coefficient of variation (V) presents a large impact on the final results. With the increase of V, the reliability index decreases, therefore a risk of failure rises. The model results are then validated with comparison to the ones available in literature and the ones calculated by Slide v.5.0. The results highlight the interest of the proposed approach.
