Abstract

The tubular bonded joint design is largely subjected either to axial or torsional loads. Such a method of joining has several advantages over more welding or mechanical joining, such as weight reduction of the structure and the easy fabrication. This research compares the torsional performance of three adhesives in aluminium tubular joints (AW6082-T651), taking into account the fluctuation of key geometric factors such as overlap length (LO) and tube thickness. The Finite Element Method (FEM) was used with Cohesive Zone Models (CZM) to forecast strength. The study was based on joint strength as assessed by the maximum torsional moment (Mm). Validation with experimental data was done previously.  The technique was positively validated with experimental data, showing the CZM ability to model tubular joints. A significant geometry effect was found on Mm, except for LO. Tube yielding limited the joint strength for higher tube’s thickness.
