Abstract

In this paper, we analyze different options to use hardware-based current measurement for time synchronization of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices. The BLE devices have a specific current draw pattern based on the status of their radio. Using appropriate circuit, the changes in the current pattern can be detected. Based on this principle, we propose several different ways to tackle the time synchronization among BLE devices in a wireless network. All different schemes presented in this paper would be under the umbrella of using an electronic circuit that detects and analyzes the current consumption pattern. The result of our experiments demonstrates that the proposed methods can be used as a means of time synchronization in BLE platform.
