Abstract

The Strutinsky method for extracting the shell corrections from the Nilsson model has been interpreted in the framework of constrained Hartree-Fock theory. Cast in this form, the shell corrections, the smooth part of the energy and those terms ignored, can all be explicitly calculated The results of such a calculation are presented here, using a procedure that circumvents the necessity for imposing constraints. It is shown that the neglected terms can be as large as 15% of the usual shell corrections, in agreement with the results of related studies. (auth)
