Abstract

Objective To understand the status of compassion fatigue and performance for goal attainment of pediatric nurses and to explore the influence of compassion fatigue on performance for goal attainment. Methods From January to March 2018, we selected 135 pediatric nurses from two ClassⅢ Grade A hospitals in Wenzhou by convenience sampling. All of the nurses were investigated with the general information questionnaire, Professional Quality of Life Scale and Nurse's Performance for Goal Attainment Scale. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and multiple linear regression were used to explore the influence of compassion fatigue of pediatric nurses on performance for goal attainment. In this survey, a total of 135 questionnaires were sent out and 132 valid questionnaires were collected with 97.8% for the valid recovery rate. Results Among 132 pediatric nurses, the scores of compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, burnout and compassion satisfaction were (83.23±11.06) , (23.86±6.62) , (24.67±6.18) and (32.94±6.12) respectively; the score of performance for goal attainment was (164.80±33.37) . Compassion satisfaction of pediatric nurses had a positive correlation with performance for goal attainment (r=0.355, P<0.01) . Secondary traumatic stress and burnout had negative correlations with performance for goal attainment (P<0.01) . Multiple liner regression analysis showed that the influences of performance for goal attainment of pediatric nurses included working lives, secondary traumatic stress, burnout and compassion satisfaction (P<0.05) . Conclusions Pediatric nurses are prone to appear compassion fatigue which could influence the performance for goal attainment. Nursing managers should take measures to actively relieve compassion fatigue of nurses to raise the performance for goal attainment, so as to improve the quality of life of pediatric nurses.
