Abstract

Objective To reveal the changes of the immunology and inflammatory indexes among children infected with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and to provide reference for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of EBV infection in children. Methods From April 1, 2017 to September 30, 2017, the laboratory testing data of 75 hospitalized children diagnosed as EBV infection in Children's Hospital Affiliated to the Capital Institute of Pediatrics was retrospectively collected. The differences between the indexes of C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer (DD), transferrin (TF), T cells, T helper/inducer cells, regulatory/suppressor T cells, CD4+/CD8+ ratio, B cells, natural killer cells (NK) and total lymphocytes and their corresponding reference values were analyzed. Results Seventy-five child cases of EBV infection were involved in the analysis. There was no statistically significant difference between the NK cell index and its corresponding reference value. The differences between the indexes of CRP, DD, TF, T cells, T helper/inducer cells, regulatory/suppressor T cells, CD4+/CD8+ ratio, B cells, total lymphocytes and their corresponding reference values were statistically significant. The mean values of CRP, DD, TF, T cells, regulatory/suppressor T cells indexes were higher than the reference values. However, the mean values of T helper/inducer cells, CD4+/CD8+ ratio, B cells, total lymphocytes indexes were lower than the reference values. Conclusions For EBV infected children, the intrinsic immune indexes showed no dramatic difference while the responding immune indexes changed. The inflammatory infection indexes changed significantly. Key words: Epstein-Barr virus; Herpesviridae; Children; Immunity; Lymphocytes
