Abstract

Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) is a standard that is used by lots of TV publishers and distributors of programs. Through it, they can offer many innovative services. HbbTV is a content distribution standard for signalling, transport and presentation of enhanced and interactive television services and related applications designed for using both a broadcast and internet networks. It is unique because it is the only standard that can provide a direct link between linear and online content and it running on hybrid terminals that include both a broadcast and internet connection. It gives a new dimension to the services offered by television programs and channels (TV and Internet) and improves the user experience for consumers by enabling innovative, interactive services over broadcast and broadband networks. The HbbTV specification was developed by the HbbTV Association to effectively manage the rapidly increasing amount of available content targeted at today’s end consumer. With a well-designed HbbTV service, TV publishers can develop new innovations and applications at the same speed as the web service. The work of the EBU Group for HbbTV is currently focused on the HbbTV v2 standard, which is developed in conjunction with the supporting TV industry. These extensions will surely secure the growing popularity of HbbTV in the future.
