Abstract

The matrix progression method is used to determine eigenvalues and eigenvectors for the free vibration problem of thin circular cylindrical shells, the basic equations being those of Flügge. Natural frequencies of vibration of cantilever cylindrical shells are calculated and compared with those found from an exact solution, an approximate solution and some already published experimental results. Several mode shapes, together with the corresponding stress resultant distributions, ars shown considering wave numbers along the circumferential direction. These enable the characteristics of vibration of thin circular cantilever shells to be described.
