Analysis Of The Effects Of Farm Size, Labour And Capital Resources On Sweet Potato Output In The Central And Northern Senatorial Districts Of Cross River State

Abstract

The effect of farm size, labour and capital resources on sweet potato output was investigated among small scale farmers in five (5) local Government Areas of Cross River State. Input – output data were colleted from 200 farmers with the aid of a structured questionnaire. Data on farm size in hectares, labour in mandays, and capital in Naira and output in kilogrammes were collected. Four functional forms of the multiple regression analysis were fitted to analyze the data. The double logarithm functional form was selected as the lead equation based on apriori agronomic expectations, the numerical strength of the R2 and the significant values of the variables. Findings obtained revealed that farm size(X 1), labour (X 2) and capital (X 3) significantly increased output of sweet potato. Based on these findings, it is recommended that for farmers to increase their output of sweet potato significantly, they should employ and manage efficiently, labour resource and increase their hectarages under cultivation with the limited amount of capital resource at their disposal.
