Abstract

Tantalum samples processed in the Grenoble drop tube exhibit different nucleation behaviour. By means of a statistical analysis, it is possible to distinguish between homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation events. In the heterogeneous case, the usual process of direct formation of the stable b.c.c. phase is challenged by the transitory appearance of the A15 metastable form of this metal.
