Abstract

In this paper assessment of effective stress and strain concentration factors at the notch root for U-shaped opposite side notches with shallow and deep notched geometry using non-linear finite element analysis (NLFEA) is presented. The paper also focuses on the prediction of stress and strain concentration factors on the notched specimens by notch stress–strain conversion (NSSC) rules viz., Neuber’s rule and equivalent strain energy density method. The results of linear finite element analysis (LFEA) are used in NSSC rules for the assessment of the stress and strain concentration factors beyond yield point of the material. The accuracy of the result is assessed by comparing results with NLFEA. On the basis of exhaustive analysis by NLFEA and NSSC rules, the empirical equations are suggested to evaluate non-linear stress and strain concentration factors by NSSC rules.
