Abstract

The deformation of an elastoplastic fiber reinforced short beam specimen is studied numerically. The properties used in the calculation are chosen to represent measured properties of graphite fiber reinforced epoxy composites (Modmor II). The strong departures (∼100 percent) of the calculated stress from those obtained via ASTM D 2344-67 estimates suggest that the short beam shear test be used only as a screening test and that where precise measurements of shearing strength are required torsion experiments be used. The plastic zone under the contact load is found to grow linearly with applied load P per unit width of the beam. In a material of yield stress τy the plastic zone radius Rp may be approximated by the formula Rp≃12Pτy.
