Abstract

The authors have elaborated a model of nonthrough surface flaws in a pipeline under variable internal pressure. The model involves a proposed scheme allowing for variation of local fracture stresses along a curvilinear crack front. Verification of the theoretical model is carried out by comparing it with the available experimental data reported elsewhere. The authors have performed a comprehensive parametric study of the influence of initial flaw geometry, pipeline dimensions and variation of properties of steels due to heat treatment and test temperature on the surface crack behavior.
