Abstract
An analysis of the response times of linear and exponential response digital rate meter algorithms to sudden changes in count rate is presented. Expressions defining minimum and maximum response times relative to changes in count rate that do not coincide with the beginning of the measurement interval are derived. Criteria for specifying the measurement interval for a desired response time are then obtained. General equations relating sampling time parameters and response times of digital rate meter algorithms are presented which form a foundation for analysis of digital implementations of classical analog rate meter circuitry.
