Abstract

The theory of Froissart and Stora of resonance depolarization of Dirac particles in circular accelerators is extended to any direction of the beam polarization at injection and a sensitive dependence on the latter direction is found. If the particles are forced to perform the same number of revolutions during the acceleration process, acceleration of horizontally polarized particles is feasible and in comparison with vertical polarization it has the advantage of a better conservation of the degree of polarization, as illustrated by our results for the DESY and the CERN-PS: Initial polarization Depolarization (%) in the DESY CERN-PS horizontal ∼25 ∼50 vertical ∼50 ∼100
